Koi Treats
Koi snacks or koi treats are a good option for koikeepers to keep their koi from getting bored with the same old koi pellets day in and day out. For best results your koi need to be fed a regular diet of good quality koi food(pellets or sticks) along with occasional treats such as fruits, vegetables, and other suitable snacks.
Koikeepers can experiment with different kinds of koi snacks to see what their koi prefer. Initially you may need to leave the snacks in the pond for a while until the fish decide if they like the koi treats or not.
Remember not to over feed your koi unless you want to end up with water quality problems. Feed your koi only what they will eat withinin about five minutes. The more you feed your koi the more waste they will produce which will reduce the water quality of the koi pond.
Don't know what koi snacks to offer your koi? Here are a few of the more popular koi treats:
- Earth Worms
- Shrimp(prawns)
- Watermelon
- Oranges
- Grapefruit
- Lettuce
- Cucumber
- Tomatoes
- Cereal: Try Cheerios(honey-nut or regular) or Puffed Rice.
- Brown Bread
- Squash
- Duckweed
By providing occasional koi treats to your fish you will keep them happy and healthy and will find that your koi will be feeding from your hand eventually. Remember, koi treats are just treats, your koi still need a regular diet of good quality koi food.
